Bo Asmus Kjeldgaard working at the IT-University to develop education in ”Sustainable management”

Bo Asmus Kjeldgaard is engaged at the IT-University in Copenhagen to develop a new course in Sustainable Management.

”In Copenhagen, the green and sustainable agenda are of highest priority. It is an honor for me to develop new educations in ”Sustainable management”, so a lot of young people in the future will be qualified to lead the society in a more responsible and sustainable direction”.

Danish touch in renovation of Beijing hutong

In 2012, Copenhagen and Beijing signed an agreement to help each other in sustainable development. During this time, many cooperation initiatives have been developed between the two cities. On September 24th, Copenhagen hosted the Sino-Danish Roundtable on Livable Cities, where representatives from both cities exchanged ideas and worked on joint projects.

Li Zhaohong, executive deputy director of the Dongcheng Administrative Committee, presented the Qinglong Hutong Community renovation plan at the meeting. The project will take place a the aforementioned area, in Beijing, and it’s being developed by the Danish company Archiland. In words of his CEO Mads Jensen Moller, the project will be gray, green and blue, which are the colours representing mobility, soft connectivity and water.

C40 cities to be Fossil-Fuel-Free by 2030

Many cities around the world are taking stridces to bring a solution to the air pollution derived from transport and traffic. The mayors of Copenhagen, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Quito, Vancouver, Mexico City, Milan, Seattle, Auckland and Cape Town have recently signed the C40 Fossil-Fuel-Free Streets Declaration, which aims to ensure that a major area of their cities are zero emission by the year 2030.

A third of greenhouse gas emissions from C40 cities are derived from transport, and traffic is the most significant source of air pollution. This issue impacts both the economy and the public health of the cities, costing  1% of GDP and 4.5 million premature deaths, according to recent studies.

How will Copenhagen become the first carbon neutral capital in 2025?

You have heard a lot about Copenhagen’s ambitious plan to become the first carbon neutral capital in the world by the year 2025. You have read about the cycling culture of Danish, and seen iconic buildings like Copenhagen International School or Amager Bakke Center.

But how does Copenhagen attempt to achieve such a thing? The CPH 2025 strategy is based on four main pillars:

  • Energy consumption
  • Energy production
  • Green mobility
  • City Administration Initiatives

Furthermore, the plan involves a large number of players in Copenhagen, including citizens, businesses and investors, knowledge institutions, and the national government.

Copenhagen Bicycle Superhighways Network

Are you familiarised with Copenhagen’s Bicycle Superhighways?

Since the first route of this network was opened in 2012, bicycle superhighways are used every day by thousands of citizens to commute to office, school or university.

To date, 45 cycle superhighways have been planned in the Capital Region in a net of approximately 746 kilometers. By 2021 a total of 15 routes will be built.

Today commuters have access to eight cycle superhighways. The first route, Albertslundruten C99, opened in 2012 and the second route, Farumruten C95, followed in 2013. In 2016 one route, Ishøjruten opened followed by five routes in 2017.

On the existing routes, there has been an increase in the number of commuters. On the Farumroute where the average commute is 14,7 km, there has been an increase in the number of cyclists by 61 % since the route became a cycle superhighway in 2013 – and an increase of 34 % on the Albertslund-route.

The State subsidies 50% of the project in order to make it affordable for municipalities surrounding Copenhagen. Besides, the municipalities have reached an agreement where each of them is responsible for running and maintaining its own part of the route.

Copenhagen International School, a huge solar façade

Copenhagen is considered a global leader when it comes to green energy. Public officers in the U.S. are looking abroad to find inspiration and make their cities more liveable.  The Mayors of Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts, have recently signed an agreement with Copenhagen. The goal is to share ideas to create more sustainable cities.

One of the most iconic buildings recently built in the city is the Copenhagen International School, located in the Nordhavn district. The building features the largest solar façade in the world, with 6,048 square meters. The 12,000 solar glass panels can generate 300 megawatt hours of electricity per year, which represents half of the school’s annual energy needs.

Bo Asmus Kjeldgaard working as EU Commission Expert

Starting with February 2016, Bo Asmus Kjeldgaard, Greenovation CEO, joined the European Commission’s panel of Experts. As an accredited expert, he will provide his knowledge on topics such as sustainability and climate adaptation.

“It is extremely valuable to be involved in climate change and environmental projects at an European level. The players and the major projects one interacts with provide a great optimism regarding climate adaptation at an European level.” Bo Asmus Kjeldgaard.

His activity as a former mayor of Copenhagen and the entrepreneurial efforts in the field of sustainability, have contributed to his current title of European Commission Expert. This type of collaborators are selected from Member States of the EU, based on their high-level expertise in the relevant fields of research and innovation.
